Gusher reporter Steve Mills reviews Hamlet! The Musical at the Royal and Derngate in Northampton...

HOW do you make a King Lear? Put the queen in a bik… Oops, wrong show, but if you laughed at that joke you will probably love this show.

The story of Denmark’s most famous prince turned into a musical is perhaps not an obvious idea.

It’s one that would probably have had Shakespeare not just turning in his grave but spinning around furiously.

However, this is such a well executed show which brings one of the Bard’s most loved classics bang up to date with a clear warmth for the original text which shines through.

A strong cast of six perform all the parts but standing out is Mark Inscoe’s inappropriately flirtatious ghost to Jess Robinson who takes crazy to a new level as Ophelia.

Tonally the show is very reminiscent of Spamalot, the Monty Python musical, as the gags came thick and fast with some fantastic songs and brilliantly executed dance routines.

It is a complete triumph and another terrific show put on by the in house creative team based at the theatre.

To go or not go, that is the question? And the answer should of course be the former.

Hamlet! The Musical is performed at the Royal stage, Northampton until Saturday May 21. Tickets can be bought by calling 01604 624811.
