PLANS for a new council crematorium for the district are set to pick up pace.

A joint committee has been created to oversee the project, which is being done jointly by Daventry district and Rugby borough councils.

The committee, made up of two elected members from Rugby Borough Council and two from Daventry District Council, will meet for the first time today (Thursday).

The Hillmorton Grounds Farm off Onley Lane, near the border with Daventry district, has been earmarked for the scheme, most likely using an existing access off Ashlawn Road.

The committee will see indicative plans of how the new site could be laid out, with detailed plans expected towards the end of July.

Daventry district councillor Alan Hills said: “Presently there are no crematoria in either the district or borough so these plans offer the opportunity to create a local facility which is accessible to as wide a range of people as possible.”
