A doctor who has been the president of a group in Daventry since it was formed 14 years ago has stepped down from her role.

Dr Anne Kilvert, who has been the president of the Daventry and District Area Branch of Diabetes UK since its formation in 2000, stepped down at the group’s annual general meeting held on Monday December 8.

She is also retiring from her position as a consultant diabetologist at Northampton General Hospital in March.

Dr Kilvert added: “There was a group based in Northampton for Diabetes UK and it came about when Barbara Kember thought there should be a group for Daventry.

“She convened some people together and there was a lot of reaction and from the group was then started.

“I saw it as part of my job to go along to the meetings and be the president helping people with diabetes.”

There have been many important parts of the job which she has been pleased to help with over the years.

Dr Kilvert said: “One of the things we do is organise speakers to come and talk to members of the group. This can give people the latest advice.

“We have also been involved in national and local fundraising. Although there is not a children’s group in Daventry, there is one in Northampton which Daventry children attend and we have organised fundraisers to help put on events where we have given the young people the chance to get away and have a day out.

“There would also be people on hand for adults to ask questions about the condition.

“I am retiring in March and I am hopeful that one of my new colleagues at the general hospital will step in and take my place.

“I would like to thank all of the people I have worked with over the years for their help and I wish the group and its members all the very best for the future.”

She was presented with a gift of flowers and a voucher at the meeting.

The group meets every month except August at the seminar room of Danetre Hospital.

It is one of over 350 voluntary groups situated throughout the UK.

The aim of the groups is to provide support and educate people living with diabetes, as well as their family, friends and anyone else who is interested in knowing more about diabetes.
