There will be minimal disruption to waste and recycling collections in Daventry district this Christmas.

Only residents whose collections fall on Christmas Day will be affected as the collections team will be working all other bank holidays over the festive season.

Waste and recycling that would normally be collected on Wednesday December 25 will be collected on Sunday December 29. Collections will take place as normal on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

As usual at this time of year, brown wheelie bin collections will be suspended from the week beginning December 23 and will resume from the week beginning January 6. Instead crews will focus on collecting extra recycling.

Households are being encouraged to put out all of their extra recycling - cardboard, plastics and cans - that piles up over the Christmas period. Anything that does not fit in the recycling boxes can be placed alongside the boxes in clear plastic bags or carrier bags, but not black or green sacks as they can be mistaken for general waste.

Large cardboard will be collected if stacked next to recycling boxes from December 23 until January 4.

For health and safety reasons all glass must be contained within the usual recycling box. Any excess bottles and jars can be taken to any one of the recycling banks located around the district.

Food waste must also be contained within the brown food waste caddy with the lockable lid.

Real Christmas trees can be placed either inside or next to brown wheelie bins for collection from January 6.

Councillor Daniel Cribbin, environment portfolio holder at DDC, said: “Christmas is always a time of year when extra recycling begins to build up for many households so these arrangements are geared up to collect as much of this at the kerbside as possible.

“Residents in Daventry district have always stepped up to the challenge of recycling as much as they can over Christmas and I am sure this year will be no exception.”

Stickers and leaflets reminding households affected by the change of collection for Christmas Day will be delivered by the councils’ partner Enterprise in the run-up to Christmas.

Calendars giving details of wheelie bin collections for 2014 and a reminder of the Christmas arrangements will also be delivered.
