THE Queen is not the only one to be celebrating a diamond anniversary this week as a couple in Byfield celebrate 60 years of marriage.
The pair queue jumped their way into each other’s hearts in 1948. Vera and a friend were waiting at the front of a queue for the cinema with Jim and his brother at the back. Fortunately, his brother knew Vera’s friend.
He asked Vera to marry him within three months but after a delayed period, they were married at St John’s Church in Walton near Liverpool.
Jim travelled to the wedding on a tram and used a double decker bus to get to the reception.
The pair now live in Edwards Close, Byfield and when asked if anything special happened to them during their married life, they both replied “Each other.”
They have two sons, Ian and Derek.
Jim worked as a senior manager with Premier Brands, he worked for 10 different companies in 49 years without ever actually leaving – due to repetitive takeovers.
To celebrate the anniversary, all of the couple’s family are descending on the Manorhouse for cream teas – that’s two children and their wives; five grandchildren (one married) and two great-grandchildren.
