Deputy looking forward to ‘innovative’ college

A DEPUTY principal has been appointed to Daventry’s new University Technical College.

Sally Kirk will take up the position of ‘Deputy Principal, Curriculum and Quality’ in January 2013, and will be based at the iCon Centre in Eastern Way until work on the UTC, on land next to the community centre in Ashby Road, has finished.

It follows the appointment earlier this year of David Edmondson as principal designate as the UTC’s management team begins to take shape before welcoming the first intake of students in September 2013.

Mrs Kirk, 41, is currently assistant head, director of learning and achievement for KS4 at Myton School in Warwick and was previously head of science at Chipping Norton School.

She has a BSc (Hons) biology from University College London, and a PGCE and MSc in professional development in education from Oxford University.

Mrs Kirk, a mother of one, said: “I am delighted to be joining the Daventry UTC team. This is a very exciting opportunity to be able to shape the development of an innovative facility from the outset.

“I am looking forward to developing a curriculum which will provide our learners with a rich blend of high quality core and vocational experiences and develop young people who have the skills and dispositions to enter the world of work as successful and well-rounded individuals.”

The UTC will specialise in a vocational curriculum in sustainable and related new technologies, alongside the core subjects of English, maths, science and a wide range of sport.

Chris Moody, chairman of the UTC board of governors, said: “We are delighted to have appointed Sally as deputy principal and look forward to her supporting the principal in providing a high-quality teaching environment in a centre of educational excellence.”

Year 10 applications for pupils starting in September 2013 are open now, while the first Year 12 entry will be in 2014.
