Monday (September 3) marks the official Merchant Navy Day which saw the first major British maritime casualty.

The merchant vessel SS Athenia was torpedoed just a few hours after hostilities were declared in 1939, killing 128 passengers and crew.

The Mayor of Daventry, Councillor Lynn Jones, will be supporting Seafarer’s UK Fly the Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day campaign by attending the flag raising ceremony, along with other town council members and community leaders.
