Daventry team aims for top three mountains

AN INTREPID team of fundraisers are gearing up for a 26-mile walking challenge.

Ian Thompson, 56 from Kinsley Avenue in Daventry, is organising a Three Peaks Challenge at the end of October in aid of Help For Heroes.

The challenge involves climbing the tallest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon) in that order, within 24 hours.

The total distanced walked will be 26 miles, and the total ascent 9,800ft.

Mr Thompson said: “I have run the London Marathon a couple of times for charity, and I also did the Yorkshire Three Peak Challenge, but I wanted to do something that’s a bit more difficult.

“There’s 11 people on the team – nine walkers and two drivers – who are all from around the local area. We’ve organised it all ourselves.

“We’re not signing up to someone else’s event; it’s been a lot of work to get everything sorted. But I have a good team and they have helped a lot.

“Some of the team have a military background – I was in the Royal Anglians, and we have a couple of ex-Paras – and others have asked to get involved because Help For Heroes is such a good charity which does important work for our servicemen and women who are still getting injured.

“I think the Paralympics have also raised the profile of those injured in the Armed Forces as well, and what they can do with that rehabilitation help.”

One of those taking part in the challenge is Paul Hart, 45, from Braunston. He said: “I got involved initially just to help with sorting out sponsorship, but then Ian asked me if I wanted to do the challenge, and I decided that it was for such a good cause I couldn’t really say no.

“I’ve done a bit of running in the past to keep fit, until the old knees have started to give up. Now I cycle a bit, but just for fitness, not with anything like this in mind.

“It’s going be tough, but we are getting ourselves ready for it.”
