THIS year’s Daventry Christmas lights switch-on is set to be the biggest to date, after outgrowing its usual location.
In previous years the event has been staged in Sheaf Street, High Street and New Street, but last year’s crowds were so big this year it will be hosted at the New Street Recreation Ground.
Daventry Town Council will be holding its Christmas Lights Event on Saturday, November 24.
It kicks off at 2pm with a packed programme for the stage to include – Scorpion Academy, Daventry Brass, Kate Fisher’s Academy of Dance, Performers Academy, Stagecoach, Academy No 1 and local band Raw Condition rounding off the entertainment. The lights will be switched on at 4.30pm.
Also joining the festivities will be Cinderella and Prince Charming from the Royal and Derngate’s pantomime and characters from the Deco Theatre’s performance of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
There will also be street entertainers balloon modelling and face painting on offer throughout town.
Lynne Scott, communications officer at the town council, said: “We’ve outgrown Sheaf Street, so we’re doing it on the playing field in New Street this year with a big stage for all the different acts we’ve got.
“It starts at 2pm and we have lots of different acts set to perform.
“The lights will be switched on at 4.30pm by the mayor and the panto characters, and then Raw Condition will be performing until around 5pm.
“It’s been really good this year as so many different acts have wanted to take part, in fact it’s been difficult to fit them all in.
“The lights will be similar to last year’s display. In coming years there are plans to add to them though.
“We’re hoping lots of people will come along and enjoy the afternoon and all the entertainment we have on offer.
“Come and join in to help us with the start of Christmas 2012 in Daventry.”
