The environmental achievements of Daventry District Council (DDC) have been recognised with an award.

The council received the Great Green Star in the Investors in the Environment (iiE) annual awards – an accolade given to organisations that go the extra mile to reduce their impact on the environment.

The iiE award is an environmental accreditation and membership scheme for organisations of all sizes and its annual awards celebrate green champions.

There are bronze, silver and green awards on offer, with extra accolades such as the Great Green Star presented to organisations that go beyond the standards expected.

DDC’s Great Green Star follows on from the Green Award it received from iiE in December.

Initiatives such as the introduction of electric pool cars and charging points, its promotion of the Big Switch energy saving scheme for residents, incentives for staff travelling to work using green methods, wildflowers projects, carbon reduction initiatives and the encouragement of recycling within the office all contributed to the Council’s success in the awards.

Cllr Jo Gilford, environment portfolio holder at Daventry District Council, said: “We work hard as a council to minimise our impact on the environment so it is extremely pleasing to see this recognised.

“We have a range of environmental goals that not only focus on what we are doing as a council, but which aim to help local communities, individuals and businesses make greener choices too.”

Commercial executive from iiE, Kim Coley said: “It’s great to be able to share our vision of creating sustainable businesses and setting a ‘standard’ for the environment.

“The iiE Awards help to share best practice, inspire others, change beliefs, perceptions and habits, and then ultimately change business cultures, helping businesses to be so much smarter and more efficient, with an engaged and happier workforce. Collectively, this is making a huge positive impact.”
