British Cycling and Sky have marked another successful year of cycling in partnership with Northamptonshire County Council, with the presentation of a framed GB Cycling Team jersey.
After an exciting summer that saw the first ever Women’s Tour, the Tour de France hit British roads and hills, the ever-popular Tour of Britain and more cycling competition gold at the Commonwealth Games, Northamptonshire County Council’s cycling programme has seen hundreds of people get out on bikes and join in the amazing season of biking.
To recognise the success of the partnership, British Cycling Recreation Manager for Northamptonshire presented the framed jersey to deputy leader Councillor Heather Smith, as a lasting reminder of an unforgettable summer: “We enjoyed a summer like no other in Britain, from the Tour de France in Yorkshire to Northamptonshire hosting the inaugural stage of the first ever Women’s Tour, as well as supporting our heroes at the Commonwealth Games. It’s a great time to be inspired by cycling and we’ve really enjoyed working with Northamptonshire County Council to get more people on more bikes than ever before,’ said Peter Cox from British Cycling.
“We were so proud to host the first leg of the first-ever Women’s Tour back in May this year.
“It was a hugely memorable day with thousands of people turning out to cheer on the cyclists as they raced through the county. And importantly, it kicked off a host of cycling events and activities, and was a great way to demonstrate Northamptonshire’s commitment to getting people on their bikes and being more active, therefore improving their health and wellbeing.”
In the last five years of British Cycling’s partnership with Sky, more and more people in Britain have been getting into cycling regularly – more than one million now cycle once a month. The partnership with Northamptonshire County Council has helped contribute to this figure and there are hundreds of opportunities to continue to ride in Northamptonshire through Sky Ride Local guided rides, women-only Breeze rides and Britain’s biggest social cycling network, Ride Social.
