POLICE in Northamptonshire have issued a warning to the public about a potential scam.

The force has had a number of reports of a computer based scam, with people reporting receving phone calls from someone claiming to be from Microsoft or Google, suggesting they have a problem with their computer and offering to fix it for a fee, normally between £60 and £150.

Officers are advising people that if they think their computer isn’t functioning at full capacity, contact a local IT specialist.

A spokesperson said: “Do not accept help from a cold caller and do not pay a fee over the telephone.

“If someone contacts you out of the blue suggesting your computer has a problem which they can fix, the likelihood is that it’s a scam.

“If your computer genuinely needs fixing, always seek advice from a reputable company.”

If you think you may have been a victim of this type scam, please report it to Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or Actionfraud on 0300 1232040.
