A HUSBAND who attacked his wife with a hammer as she lay in her bed has been jailed.

David Swales was originally charged with the attempted murder of 54-year-old Ann after the April 20 incident at the flat they shared in Howe Crescent on the Southbrook, Daventry – a charge he denied.

But the 54-year-old pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and at a sentencing hearing at Northampton Crown Court on Thursday, October 6, he was sentenced to five years and three months in prison.

David Lee, prosecuting, said Swales had hit his wife over the head with a hammer three times, before dialling 999 to tell police he thought he had killed her.
