Christmas waste and recycling arrangements for residents in Northampton and Daventry District

Recycling guides and 2014-16 collection calendars, which include arrangements for over the Christmas period, have been landing on doormats.

There will be minimal disruption over the festive period with most collections taking place as normal, including on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

There will, however, be no collections on Christmas Day (Thursday), with the properties affected instead receiving a collection on Sunday 28 December. Households affected by this will be reminded with a sticker on their bin or information card through their letterbox.

Brown bin collections will be suspended over Christmas and New Year from Monday December 22 to enable crews to focus on collecting extra recycling.

People are being encouraged to put out all the extra paper, cardboard, plastics and cans that pile up over the Christmas period. Anything that does not fit in the recycling boxes can be placed alongside the boxes in clear plastic bags or carrier bags, but not black sacks as they can be mistaken for general refuse. Large cardboard will also be collected if stacked next to recycling boxes from Boxing Day until the second Monday in January.

When brown bin collections resume, residents will be able to leave out their real Christmas trees for collection alongside their brown bins up until Saturday, January 31. Residents who do not have brown wheelie bin collections can leave their real Christmas trees next to their recycling boxes during this period or take them to their local waste recycling centre.

Councillor Mike Hallam, Northampton Borough Council cabinet member for the environment, said: “People in Northampton do a really great job at recycling their household waste. There is always more at this time of year and it would be great to see this all being recycled too.”

Councillor Daniel Cribbin, Environment Portfolio Holder at Daventry District Council said: “From wrapping paper to Christmas cards, packaging, food waste and extra bottles and cans, the festive period can generate a lot of rubbish. The good news is much of it can be recycled.

“Our residents always do a great job of recycling their waste at this time of year and we’re sure they will once again join us in recycling as much as possible this Christmas.”
