A series of free events aimed at getting children running is being launched by Midlands charity Kids Run Free in partnership with Daventry District Council.

The charity will be holding running races for children aged up to 16 years every first Saturday of the month at the recreation ground on Welton Road, Daventry, from Saturday, October 4 at 9am.

Children can compete in races ranging from 50 to 1,000 metres, with each child being awarded stickers they can later cash in to claim a free T-shirt.

Families are welcome to come together to support their children and the Kids Run Free also offer noncompetitive races for youngsters.

The charity, which has also launched similar events in Northampton and Leamington Spa, aims to get children running from an early age to improve confidence, healthiness and encourage a passion for sports.

Currently more than 3,500 children across the country get involved in races.

At the end of August health experts called for a new task force to be set up to combat childhood obesity with one in three children under the age of 15 being overweight or obese.
