A CHEQUE from the town’s stroke group has been handed to a specialist gym.
The Daventry Stroke Support Group handed over £2,500 to Reach For Health Gym on High March in town.
Chairman of the group Ian Simpson said: “A while ago the stroke group was given £3,000 by three county councillors from their empowerment fund because the support we got from the Stroke Association stopped due to funding problems.
“We decided to give the money to Reach For Health because that’s where we meet. The gym isn’t one focussed on getting people fit, but about making them better. Lots of stroke survivors have balance problems, and you have to re-teach your brain. When I started at the gym I could barely walk. Now, I’m not perfect, but I’m much better.
“Some of the money has already been spent on a treadmill, and the rest I think will go on a defibrillator.
“Our target now is to make more people aware of the group. It’s for stroke survivors and carers too. We have posters up in GP surgeries, but we need to get the GPs themselves to start telling patients about us.”
The stroke group meets on the second Thursday of the month at Reach For Health at 2.15pm.
