A main car park in Daventry town centre has been closed this week due to emergency repairs to its security shutters.
The Welton Road Undercroft Car Park, located beneath the Abbey Retail Park and near Daventry District Council’s (DDC) offices, was shut for work to be done on the shutters which automatically close and open the car park each day.
A recent inspection on the entrance and exit shutters identified signs of failure within both of them, leading to emergency repairs being required.
The council has faced delays in repairing the devices quickly, and says although it can not yet say when the car park will reopen, it is working to get the repairs done as soon as possible in order to put the undercroft back into use as soon as it is safe to do so.
Motorists are advised to continue using alternative parking, including the Eastern Way car park ( on the opposite side of Eastern Way near the iCon) and the Old Gas Works and Chaucer Way/old out door pool car parks – all of which are long stay and are at most a couple of minutes’ walk from the undercroft car park.
DDC’s business manager Simon Bowers said: “Regrettably it has proven more difficult to secure rapid repairs to the Welton Road Undercroft Car Park than originally hoped.
“The car park is likely to remain closed this week, but we are seeking a solution with a view to reopening as soon as we possibly can.”
