A family from Staverton have just finished work on England’s newest and largest canal hotel boat which they built in just five months.

The Milburn family have been making boats at their site on Shuckburgh Road since 1992 and recently completed work on the luxurious Wessex Rose Hotel Boat.

Measuring 70ft in length and 12ft 6 ins in width and weighing over 50 tonnes, the boat is something very special and carries six passengers in three en-suite cabins, a large lounge and roof-top deck .

Andy Milburn, 42, who started the company with father John, 70, worked together with brother Pete, wife Emma and mum Pat to make the boat.

He said: “It’s turned out really well and we are pleased with it. We usually make narrow boats but have only made one other this big before.

“It’s a nice challenge to make something a bit different and to work on it with the family as well.”

The family designed the boat themselves to make it as spacious as possible.

Director of The Wessex Rose Hotel Boat Company, David Binney, said: “The dedication, inventiveness and the passion that the Milburn team have for boat building has resulted in a spectacular boat build to very exacting specification where quality has always been top of the list.”
