Body discovered under ice in canal at Crick

POLICE have cordoned off an area of Crick Wharf on the West Haddon Road following the discovery of a man’s body in the Grand Union Canal this morning (Thursday).

Formal identification of the man has not yet taken place but the body but police say they believe it to be that of a 63-year-old man from Suffolk who had a boat moored in the area.

There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death and we are preparing a report for the coroner.

The body was discovered by a passer-by at 8am.

Officers are carrying out enquiries in the vicinity and with boat owners in the area.

The search of the canal and recovery of the body took about four hours.

Locals said they pulled out several bicycles and that the man appeared to have suffered an injury to the front of his head.

A workmate of the man who found the body said: “He was under the ice so he must have been there all night.

“Whatever caused him to fall in, he wouldn’t have had much chance in the water with the temperatures so cold.”
