A village’s soap box derby and fete is set to be bigger than last year’s with more teams competing, and more activities laid on.

With just over a week to go to Welton Soap Box Derby on Saturday June 20, 41 cars are set to line up on the start, up on last year’s 29.

Entries closed for the carts at the end of May and there are some interesting teams that have signed up.

Organiser Chris Barlow said: “We have Black Thunder and F1 Scouting from the same scout group, so expect some real competion there; there’s model Reliant Robin on three wheels called the Yellow Peril which will be interesting to watch negotiate the course. Then Bathbomb I think are building theirs out of a real bath, and the Bin Mobile team are using a wheelie bin as the heart of their cart. Shark Attack are returning from last year, with some improvements to the cart as well.

“We’ve got people signed up from as far away as Coventry, Luton, Northampton, Bedford. It’s fantastic.

“As well as the races, we’ve got food and drink vendors lined up along the length of the course, the pub is putting on a mini beer festival over the weekend, and there’s the fete itself with all the traditional activities going on.

“We’ve got Halfords doing the scrutineering on the carts before they race as people sign in. They’ll be checking the steering, the brakes and the general structure. They’ll all be weighed as well to make sure they’re below the limit.

“Loads of other people and companies are helping out.Amber Screen & Display from Dodford did a whole load of flyers and things for us. Jab Tyres are supplying tyres for the edge of the course. Farmer David Ofield is supplying straw bales for the crash barriers, another farmer Ian Treadgold is providing his field for the car park. Stepnells Construction are bringing crowd barriers, safety nets and more.

“We’ve also got a team of volunteers who will be doing all the admin, marshalling and more on the day. And BBC Northampton will be bringing their roadshow along and broadcasting live from the village over the day.”

Welton Soap Box Derby takes place on Saturday June 20 from 1pm to 5pm, with the start line near the White Horse pub.
