The end of an era

Radio masts in Daventry
Radio masts in Daventry

These pictures are part of a series taken by Weedon resident Ronald Bree.

They show the last of the old masts on Brough Hill being demolished in the 1990s.

As locals know the hill had been used since the 1920s by the BBC to broadcast radio around the world.

The BBC decided to close the station and on the 29 March 1992 the last transmission took place, and the transmission equipment was moved to other BBC World Service transmitters around the country. The masts were soon taken down.

These days only one mast remains on the hill, used as a booster for digital radio and by mobile phone networks.
