A STRICTLY Come Dancing winner will be putting his dancing shoes back on in a world premiere new show starting next week.
Tom Chambers takes the role of Jerry Travers in the world premiere of the musical Top Hat at Milton Keynes Theatre.
The show sees Travers visit London from America to perform and while rehearsing a routine in his hotel bedroom wakes up Dale Tremont, played by Hollyoaks star Summer Strallen, and falls hopelessly in love. It is a daunting challenge for Tom who is steps into the shoes of his idol.
He said: “While growing up, the people I knew had heroes including Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone whereas mine were Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly.
“It is great to be performing a role like this. There are many people who will have been looking forward to seeing this show for years so we have all been practising really hard to make it live up to and exceed people’s expectations.
Tom’s passion for the works of Fred Astaire made him the perfect choice to take on one of the most famous films.
He added: “When I was an out of work actor, I made a video of myself performing a Fred Astaire dance and literally went through it frame by frame on a VHS tape to get it right.
“I put the video on you tube and because the producers saw that and my performances on Strictly, they knew I could do it.”
And his passion for the show makes him dedicated to make it an extra special night out for the audience.
Tom said: “We have been doing 13 hours days, so I end up having not just packed lunch but a packed dinner and have been rehearsing all those hours. I have never been fitter and the love handles have well and truly disappeared. It has been like training for the Olympics but I am sure it will be worth it.”
He thinks Top Hat will appeal to people of all ages.
Tom added: “There are some wonderful dances moves, some lovely Irving Berlin music with classic songs including Top Hat, White Tie and Tails and Cheek to Cheek. It is a very funny show, there are a lot of complications which leads to some great moments of comedy.”
Top Hat will be on at Milton Keynes from Tuesday to Saturday August 27. Call the box office on 0844 8717652 or visit www.atgtickets.com/milton-keynes-theatre to book tickets.
