But this adaptation of The 39 Steps, celebrating its 10th anniversary, is a triumph in what can be achieved with a few props and some clever acting.

The entire cast were heroes, particularly Rob Witcomb and Andrew Hodges who take on the majority of the parts in the show.

But also credit must go to Richard Ede as Richard Hannay and Olivia Greene who takes on all the various romantic attachments Hannay has throughout the story.

This show reminds you of why it has been running in the West End for the past 10 years.

Because it would be easy to do a straight forward adaptation but rather than that, there are lashings of jokes. Some of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic films are referenced throughout and there are moments which have you roaring with laughter.

Simply superb and an utter delight.

The 39 Steps can be seen at Royal & Derngate until Saturday. For tickets call 01604 624811 or visit www.royalandderngate.co.uk.
