Review - The Full Monty at Milton Keynes Theatre
Taking one of the feelgood movies of the late 1990s, this stage version brings all the joy of the film.
The Full Monty sees six out-of-work men decide to put on a strip act to earn some much-needed cash. Most shows tackling issues such as unemployment, despair, suicide, impotence and homosexuality would be dreary affairs.
But while these are depicted head on, it never feels preachy. In fact, feelgood is the word that definitely describes this show, which is more enjoyable than the film as it benefits from having an audience responding to the gags. The cast certainly feed off the atmosphere in the stalls and makes for the perfect tonic to the new year.
And there is not a duff performance among the cast with every single actor absolutely superb.
They convey both the tragedy in their lives with the jokes and camaraderie that goes with male friendships.
I can guarantee you will leave the theatre smiling having watched this – and not just because of the ending!
The Full Monty can be seen at Milton Keynes Theatre until Saturday. For tickets call the box office on 0844 871 7652 or visit www.atgtickets.com/miltonkeynes.
