There will be two very different takes on festive cheer when amateur dramatics groups present their Christmas shows.

The award winning Guilsborough Music and Drama Society (GMADS) will be performing Alan Ayckbourn’s Season’s Greetings while Napton Pantomime Group will be performing the traditional festive show Aladdin.

Written by the legendary playwright, Season’s Greetings is a black, though often farcical, comedy about a dysfunctional family Christmas, set over Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day in an average English suburban house.

Director Pam Townsend said: “We have done two Alan Ayckbourn plays before, Confusions and Bedroom Face and everyone has enjoyed doing both of those.

“What has been interesting is that we have one or two new members who have never done a play, and there are others who have done one. We simply chose to do an Ayckbourn play because we enjoyed doing the others so much and he is a very good writer.”

The group, which is celebrating its 40th year, has been busy at work on the show since September and there are a number of technical challenges.

Pam said: “A lot of this show is down to timing, so we have one bit where two scenes are on simultaneously, so you have to get that exactly right. But the cast work very hard and I hope it will all come together on the night.”

GMADS also got a runner up award from the National Operatic and Dramatic Association East Midlands, beating groups from six different counties to the award with its last production of Agatha Christie’s Cards on the Table.

The group is hoping for a big turn out on the night even the show is not for children.

Pam added: “It is a Christmas show and while there are no children in it, I think there are a lot of situations in the show which people will identify with.

“There might be no children in the show but that doesn’t stop some of the adults behaving like children.”

The winter season would not be complete without a traditional pantomime and Aladdin will be shown in Napton.

The show’s producer Colin East said: There are some new faces, as well as some familiar ones, providing an entertainment for all ages.

“Please come and join us, and remember that, in the true pantomime tradition, you have to boo the baddies and cheer the goodies.

“We look forward to seeing old and new friends, so let’s all have a good time. “

The GMADS production of Season’s Greetings at Guilsborough Village Hall will run from Wednesday November 27 to Saturday November 30 and starts at 7.30pm. There is a matinee on the final day starting at 2.30pm.

Tickets for the show cost £8 and can be booked by calling 01604 740549.
