A Northamptonshire marina is gearing up to celebrate its 50th anniversary with plans in place to mark the occasion.

Whilton Marina on the Grand Union Canal near Daventry was created by David Steele, who had a background in civil engineering and construction, in 1971

The third generation of the Steele family is now actively involved in the running of the marina, which was of the first of its kind to be built inland in the country.

This year the marina had to close to the public for several months, but since reopening in June the staff have been busy due to huge demand from prospective boat buyers.

Despite the pandemic, the marina has had a successful year and can now look forward to celebrating its golden year in 2021.

To commemorate the 50th year celebration, every boat sold will be fitted with a polished brass plaque engraved with Whilton Marinas signature bridge that is situated at the entrance of the marina.

Robert Steele, director of Whilton Marina, said: “Over the past 50 years we have been the pioneers of the boating industry, we have always adapted to the current climate, worked hard and put in the time and effort to thrive as a company.

“We have invested heavily in the future of the business to keep us ahead of our competitors and to deliver the best service possible.

“Luckily we are enjoying a successful year in unprecedented times”

Whilton Marina is also planning to hold competitions and giveaways, including a prize of a narrowboat holiday, throughout 2021 for everyone to take part in, which will be held on the marina’s social media pages.
