Five people who had tested positive for Covid-19 died at Northampton General Hospital on Tuesday, updated figures have revealed today.

It makes it the largest number of coronavirus-related deaths in a single 24-hour period for nearly a month.

Today's daily NHS bulletin revealed two more victims on Tuesday of this week (June 9), adding to the three on the same day that were revealed in yesterday's figures.

The hospital last saw five deaths on the same day on May 14 when the Covid-19 pandemic was just past its peak. Ten people died on Easter Sunday, April 12 — the most on one day since the first victim, a 92-year-old, on March 16.

Analysts have repeatedly warned of a four or five-day lag in reporting and recording deaths in hospital which means figures can vary from day to day.

Northampton and Kettering General Hospital were among 44 out of 217 NHS Trusts in England to announce more victims today.

Front line NHS staff in the county's two main hospitals have now seen 466 patients die after testing positive for the coronavirus bug. Of those, 263 have been in Northampton and 203 in Kettering.

The number of known victims across Northamptonshire now stands at 590, including 124 coronavirus-related deaths recorded by the Care Quality Commission in county care homes up to last Friday (June 5).

Eight more patients have died under the care of Northamptonshire Health Foundation Trust which provides mental health, community nursing, sexual health and physiotherapy services within the county and also at prisons elsewhere. Locations have not been confirmed for these deaths so they are not be included in our county totals.

Labs have now returned 1,606 positive coronavirus tests in Northamptonshire according to the latest figures collated at 9am today (Friday), a rise of 12 in the previous 24 hours and 50 in the last seven days.
