Lab tests reveal just one new Covid-19 case in the last 24 hours in Northamptonshire

Official figures revealed just one new Covid-19 case in Northamptonshire in the most recent 24 hour period.

The number of positive coronavirus tests in the county rose to 1,572 when the latest announcement was made on Monday (June 8), compared to 1,571 on Sunday.

The rise is the lowest in one day in 2½ months since March 22 — the day before the UK lockdown was announced — when the total number of infections in Northamptonshire stood at just 21.

Figures are collated at 9am each day and relate to positive lab-confirmed test results.

Northamptonshire has bucked the national trend lately with Covid-19 infection rates not falling as fast as in other areas.

And the latest slowdown — Sunday's figures showed five new infections — is unlikely to persuade health officials to stop issuing urgent warnings to avoid risking spreading the deadly bug until the number of new infections continues to stay low for a significant period of time.

The daily rise in the number of infections peaked at 85 on April 6 and has remained stubbornly in double digits over the last two weeks.

Northampton General Hospital has seen 252 Covid-19 patients die since the pandemic began with another 194 victims at Kettering General Hospital according to latest figures collated at 5pm on Sunday (June 8).

The grim total of known coronavirus-related deaths county-wide now stands at 563, including a further 119 in care homes up to May 29.
