Northants students can be part of a free online operating theatre experience

A medical operating theatre experience for students that normally tours the country and has previously visited a Northampton school has moved online.

Operating Theatre Live, which is aimed at 14-19-year-olds, gives students an insight into the medical profession, including live dissections.However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the live tour currently cannot go ahead so the programme, which has been seen on Dragons’ Den, has moved online.

Students from across the country are invited to take in the online events that can be accessed for free.

Samuel Piri, anatomist, teacher and programme director said: “The educational landscape has changed dramatically as a result of coronavirus with huge disparity in the frequency and amount of home learning students are getting from school.

“We are supporting schools, teachers and students by offering a quality educational resource to students weekly for free.

“Operating Theatre Live TV is aimed at students aged 14-19 and will help students keep their science and maths fresh and up to date.

“Written by me and my team who have over 10 years in education; each show is centred around a patient in the clinical setting.”

During the sessions, students follow the role of a trauma doctor bringing the systems of the human body alive through dissections with the chance to ask questions during the live stream through social media.

Samuel added: “We follow the pathology of a patient learning the fundamental biology, chemistry, physics and maths that underpins both their pathology and their treatment.

“I am joined by leading doctors and academics as well as experts in propelling students towards careers in health and medicine.

“The show is free to watch weekly and episodes include GCSE, A Level, BTEC, National-5, Highers, IGCSE & IB matched worksheets.

“We encourage all students to watch along regardless of their career ambitions with a fundamental focus on the series being integrated cross curriculum learning up to A Level.”
