Daventry’s Aldi store in Sheaf Street will close its doors for the final time next week.

The busy store, which opened in the heart of the town centre in 2010, will close the tills and lock the doors for the last time on Wednesday November 26.

Aldi confirmed the closing date to this newspaper whilst also adding that the new store at the Abbey Retail Park will open the following day – Thursday November 27 at 8am. The new store will replace the existing Aldi on Sheaf Street and will be run by Store Manager Josh Edwards, along with a team of 35 colleagues from in and around Daventry. As part of the opening preparations, Aldi submitted a planning application to West Northants Council on September 29 to add signage onto the front of the store.

The planning application, for Unit 7, Abbey Retail Park South Way, Daventry, NN11 4GL, was approved on November 18.

As part of a move that’s been on the cards for a number of years, Aldi finally gave official confirmation to this newspaper earlier this month that the new store is set to open at the former Homebase site. In February 2022, the Daventry Express revealed that Aldi had its eye on the Homebase site at the Abbey Retail Park off Welton Road as part of multi billion pound plans for expansion across the UK.

A spokesman for Homebase said at the time that Daventry will not lose the garden and DIY store and it had no plans for relocation.

Following the nationwide collapse of Homebase in November 2024, the Daventry store closed its doors for the final time in February this year.

The site lay dormant for many weeks but rumours began to circulate when building work began at the unit – with Aldi colours wrapped around the site as part of the safety hoardings.

This newspaper has approached Aldi’s press office on multiple occasions during the last few months with all media enquiries being ignored – until this month.

The new store will offer fresh, British meat products with weekly offers, Aldi’s award-winning ‘Specially Selected’ range, exclusive beers, wines and spirits, and a ‘food to go’ section at the front of the store. Aldi’s legendary Specialbuys will also be available in the middle aisle every Thursday and Sunday, offering extraordinary value on a wide range of products, from electrical items to garden tools. As Aldi has been fueling Team GB with fresh, healthy food since 2015 through monthly vouchers, Josh and his team will be joined by bronze medalist Sarah Jones to celebrate the store opening by cutting the all-important ribbon on opening morning.

Sarah will also give away complimentary bags of fresh fruit and vegetables from Aldi’s famous Super 6 range to the first 30 customers in the queue.

Aldi Store Manager Josh said: “We can’t wait to open the doors to the new store in Daventry. It’s set to be a special day and having Olympic hero Sarah Jones join us will make it a morning to remember.”

Hockey star Sarah Jones added: “I’m so excited to be opening Aldi’s new store; it will be great to chat to customers and a lovely way for me to thank Aldi for its support of Team GB.”

The new Aldi store is also calling on local charities and food banks in Daventry to register with Neighbourly, a community engagement platform that links businesses to charitable organisations in the local community.

Local charities that register will be able to collect surplus food and perishable products, such as fruit, vegetables and baked goods, seven days a week. Any charities in the area that would like to partner up with the new Aldi store should email [email protected]. The new store will open seven days a week, Monday to Saturday from 8am to 10pm and on Sundays from 10am to 4pm.
