The ground-breaking rock musical is based on the play by German dramatist Frank Wedekind and is an unflinching account of confused teenage sexuality and the pressure exerted by society’s repressive codes.

Wedekind’s original play has caused controversy since its first performance in 1906. The 2006 Broadway musical adaptation brings original alternative rock songs into the narrative.

This Royal & Derngate production features 28 young people aged from 14 to 21 from the Youth Theatre’s Musical Company, who have worked with professional musical director Simon Edgerton and choreographer Simone Coxall.

Spring Awakening can be seen in the theatre’s Undergound space at 8pm from Thursday, February 28 to Saturday, March 2.

Tickets cost £7 and can be booked by calling the box office on 01604 624811 or logging on to

The show is recommended for those aged 14 and above.
