Growing pains on Royal & Derngate stage

A group of late 19th-century German students make the fraught journey from adolescence to adulthood in Royal & Derngate Youth Theatre’s production of Spring Awakening.

The ground-breaking rock musical is based on the play by German dramatist Frank Wedekind and is an unflinching account of confused teenage sexuality and the pressure exerted by society’s repressive codes.

Wedekind’s original play has caused controversy since its first performance in 1906. The 2006 Broadway musical adaptation brings original alternative rock songs into the narrative.
