Coronation Street star Vicky Binns swaps the cobbles for Hollywood when she lines up for a classic musical.
The actress, who played Molly Dodds, appears in Singin’ in the Rain as Lina Lamont at Milton Keynes Theatre based on the famous film.
Don Lockwood is a silent movie star with everything he could want - fame, adulation and a well-publicised ‘romance’ with his co-star Lina Lamont. But Hollywood is about to change forever. There is rumour in the studio of a new kind of film, where the actors actually talk...and sing...and dance. Can Don and the uniquely voiced Lina make the transition and will chorus girl Kathy Selden fulfil her dream of stardom and capture Don’s heart along the way?
Vicky said: “It is an absolute dream of part, one of my favourites I have ever had, I play the part of a silent movie star who has got it all but soon finds herself down and out when they do talking movies as she has a really hideous voice.”
And one of the things she admires about the show is the ambition behind the scenes.
Vicky said: “I went to see the show in the West End and loved it. When I heard they were going to do the tour, the producers told me they were going to have the same production values as the West End and that includes the water so the front few rows might get wet.
“Although it might be a good time to get the shower gel out and have a wash at the same time.
“It is a really brilliant show and scary in a way because the film is so iconic. But the ambition of it means that all of the moments that people expect to be in the show are.”
Vicky had a dramatic departure from the soap as part of the show’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
She said: “It was really surreal filming the show. Doing the show live was a very odd experience but very thrilling.
“One of the most pressurising things about filming the show live wasn’t learning the lines but actually being in the right place at the right time. Because some of the sets are quite some distant apart, you’ve got to be in the right place at the right time.
“It was great because when I said I wanted to leave, they outlined this story they had got planned for me and I just gasped, I thought it was a great exit.
And Vicky is forever grateful to appearing on the cobbles.
She said: “When I left Emmerdale, I was thinking that I wouldn’t be in another soap opera, mainly because there are not many actors who have appeared in more than one soap.
“So it was surprising to appear on Coronation Street. Initially, my contract didn’t last that long but I ended up staying for five years.
“People do remember you as well and it is nice that people do. Even though it annoyed my mum when people shouted Molly.
“It is a show which is so well loved and being in it has enabled me to gets parts like this.”
