Moral dilemmas explored

Arthur Miller’s The Crucible focuses on the fate of those caught up in the persecution surrounding the 1692 Salem witch trials.

The play was written in 1953 and was a reflection of Senator McCarthy’s hunt for Communists in 1950s America.

The play’s meaning said Miller, was “somewhat different in different places and moments.”

Now the play is to be presented by Banbury Cross Players, and director Chrissie Garrett’s vision centres on the themes of hysteria, fear of differences and hunting out those who think differently, staging the play in modern dress and in a timeless fashion.

Roles available include John Proctor, a sinner, guilty about his affair, strong complex character, respected farmer with short temper, central figure (40 - 60 years); Abigail Williams, strong, manipulative, arrogant, quick witted, dominant and very attractive; and Rebecca Nurse, a strong character with moral courage, almost saintly (70 years).

There is also opportunity for four younger actresses (16 - 20 years) to play important roles including Tibuta the slave.

Auditions will be held at The Mill Arts Centre at 7.30pm on Thursday (June 30). Performance dates are Wednesday November 2 - Saturday 5. You do not need to be a member to audition, but will have to join if cast. Rehearsals will be on Monday and Wednesday evenings commencing in August.
