Massive Tragedy comes to Northampton

Presented by internationally acclaimed ensemble company Peepolykus (who brought Spyski and The Hound of the Baskervilles to Northampton), Gustave Flaubert’s ground-breaking masterpiece is brought spectacularly to life.

Two-time Olivier nominated Emma Fielding plays the title role of Emma Bovary. Joining Fielding are John Nicholson and Javier Marzan of Peepolykus and Jonathan Holmes, who together have the unenviable challenge of playing all the remaining roles in Flaubert’s epic tale.

The Massive Tragedy of Madame Bovary! is lovingly derailed by John Nicholson and Javier Marzan from Gustave Flaubert’s seminal nineteenth century novel and is directed by Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse Artistic Director Gemma Bodinetz.

Performed by a cast of just four – with a fair amount of doubling – this hilarious take on the traditional tale includes mesmeric love scenes featuring a stupendous collection of devastatingly handsome men and questions the impotence of women in a Victorian patriarchal society.

Audiences will marvel at how many parts a Spanish man with limited English can play with only one moustache. There will be vermin, visual absurdity, wild animals and a nun.

The production which opened at the Everyman in Liverpool then plays at co-producing partners Bristol Old Vic, Nuffield, Southampton and finally at Royal & Derngate.

Performances are at 7.45pm nightly, and matinees at 2.30pm on Thursday and Saturday.
