And having been matchday captain for both the Aviva Premiership and Amlin Challenge Cup final wins, he can’t wait to steer the ship on a full-time basis.

“It’s a very privileged position and I’m hugely honoured to accept the role of captain,” Wood said.

“I’m really looking forward to an exciting new challenge.

“On field it will be much of the same and nothing changes in terms of the way I approach a game and commit to the club.

“A lot of it will be behind the scenes, tying in the non-matchday 23 with those who are selected and making sure the squad’s united, the coaches are on the same page and all of those sort of things.

“As far as leading the lads out and what happens on matchday, those things will be much the same I would imagine.”
