Town players are tested in tough week of matches

A WEEK of tough matches for Daventry's squash teams produced a mixed set of results, with two wins and three heavy defeats.

An under-strength Daventry 2 went into this game hoping to secure as many points as possible in their battle against relegation.

Despite a recent back injury Jon Maynard kicked the match off with an excellent come back 3-2 win.

Danny Carty attempted to follow Jon's lead and despite falling 2-0 down, battled back superbly to level the match at 2-2. But he lost a close decider.

This was as good as it got for the second team as captain John McGrath, Andy Machin and Stewart Williams all lost their matches 3-0 to strong opposition.

Antony Nesbitt and Roy Free were in top form hitting winners from all corners of the court on their way to 3-0 wins.

The match as a contest was over after Ben Smallwood continued his fine recent form after being promoted to the fifth team with a 3-1 win. Phil Mansell was hoping to bounce back after his cup defeat last week. He quickly fell 2-0 behind but following a pep talk from his team mates, stormed back to win the next three sets to take the match 3-2.

In the final match Joe

Bodenstein had a tough time against an unbeaten opponent and lost 3-0.

Daventry 5 were hoping to consolidate their position in the top half of the league against Cripps.

Captain Austen Humphrey was expecting another victory which would all but guarantee a top half finish but Dave McQuillan, Neil Aldersley, Jim Simpson and Austen Humphrey all suffered defeats. Colin Bendel stopped

the rot with a confident

3-1 victory.

Captain Austen Humphrey was disappointed with the result and felt that on another night some of the results may have gone their way.

The final game of the

week saw high-flying

Daventry 6 against a

struggling Saints side.

Captain Steve Wightman in his pre-match team talk

demanded a big win to keep the pressure on at the top of the table. Buoyed by these positive words, Daventry 6 stormed out of the blocks with Richard Jones, Nigel Berriman, Steve Wightman, Ben Humpage and Steve Loydall all recording emphatic 3-0 wins. Unfortunately the

whitewash was not to be as Nigel Berriman dropped two sets in a 3-2 victory.
