Town too hot for visitors Chertsey
LEADING Daventry Town marksman Scott Cross made his intentions clear early on, with two efforts on goal which were saved by the Chertsey Town goal keeper Rhys Marshall. But it took just 16 minutes for Cross to add to his impressive goal-scoring record this season.
A determined run on goal by Ross Oulton, evading tackles and neatly retaining possession of the ball, enabled Oulton to pass the ball out right to Adam Confue. He crossed the ball directly to the feet of Scott Cross, who side footed the ball past the beaten Chertsey keeper to give Town an early lead.
Soon after the first goal, Daventry Town were awarded a free-kick.
Former Northern Ireland International Michael Bryan took the free kick, straight into the chest of the Chertsey defensive wall. The former Watford player was beginning to show glimpses of the skills for which he was given a professional contract, skills which came to the spectator’s attention, with the second Daventry goal.
The goal was perfection.A great ball across the full width of the field from former Northampton Town player Liam Dolman, fell perfectly at the feet of Michael Bryan, who approaching the Chertsey goal, picked his spot with a curling shot into the top left hand corner of the net, easily beating the Chertsey keeper.
Chertsey briefly troubled Town with a Michael Knight header, easily saved by Daventry keeper Richard Morris.
And Morris was again called into action soon after, expertly tipping a shot over the bar from Chertsey centre-back Michael Blount.
Aaron King came on as a substitute for Scott Cross in the second-half and Aaron created several chances to increase the Daventry lead. He turned swiftly on the ball to hit a shot on goal, which was turned round the post for a corner, and another shot on goal which was comfortably saved by keeper Marshall.
The final whistle came just after Daventry wing-back, Jamie Gould hit a shot wide of the right-hand post from a free-kick.
Daventry Town are now seventh in the league table with games in hand over their promotion rivals. Godalming Town won 5-1 away from home at Ashford Town and Slough Town, recovering quickly from their FA Cup exit at the hands of Mansfield Town on penalties, beat Chalfont St Peter by 2-1.
Burnham won by 2-0 at Thatcham Town and Guildford City piled on the pressure for Woodford United by 4-1.
With league games against Guildford City, Slough Town, Ashford (Middlesex) and Uxbridge in the next few weeks, Daventry Town need to consolidate their position in the league table, to push on for promotion in the New Year.
This Saturday, Daventry Town play Aylesbury at Communications Park. An excellent home victory by 4-1 against Uxbridge Town last week, has pushed Aylesbury up to fourteenth position in the league table, nine points below Daventry Town.
This season, the attendances are on average around 150 people at Communications Park, the fifth best in the Southern League Division. With the club pushing for promotion and playing attractive football, it is expected those figures will rise in the New Year.
