TOYOTA MR2 driver David Bryant grabbed an unexpected second place in the Classic Sportscar race at Spa Francochamps.
Friday qualifying took place in wet conditions and a spectacular flying lap at the end of the session put the Class B Toyota on pole ahead of the faster Class E cars which had struggled for grip on the demanding Formula One circuit.
On Saturday the one-hour race started under dark skies and a damp track. If the weather improved and the track dried, David and teammate Mark Jessop feared they would be overhauled by the Porsches lined up behind them on the grid.
With Mark taking the rolling start he defended hard through the La Source hairpin and the very fast Eau Rouge corner on the first lap, but fell behind the Porsche 928, Porsche 930 Turbo and Fiat Coupe Turbo by the end of Kemmel straight dropping to fourth overall.
On lap two the safety car was deployed after a Morgan Plus 8 hit a barrier and the race was brought to a halt while the damaged car was recovered.
As the race restarted heavy rain began to fall playing once again into the hands of the MR2 which was able to pass the rapid Fiat and later on force the Porsche 930 into an error, spinning out at the hairpin and relinquishing second place.
The race was cut short of the intended 60 minutes when under worsening conditions and poor visibility two Caterham 7s collided at high speed. Both drivers were taken to nearby hospitals and later released with minor injuries.
In addition to second overall the Toyota pair also won their class.
The next meeting will be at Cadwell Park in July.
