Long Buckby beat the wet weather and their nearest title rivals as they went clear at the top of the Midlands Four East (South) table.
The heavy rains of last week wreaked havoc with the sporting fixtures in the area, but leader Long Buckby were able to stage their clash with second-placed Oundle at Station Road, and were glad they did.
Oundle more than played their part in an excellent game, and indeed the visitors drew first blood when they scored a try to go 5-0 ahead.
The visitors also added a drop goal, while for Buckby Andrew Frankland landed a penalty and at half-time Oundle were 8-3 ahead.
However, for most of the second half Buckby were dominant.
After 48 minutes Buckby kicked a penalty to the corner, and having won the lineout, second row Sam Evans drove forward. Supported by Tim Dixon and Fergus Murray the ball was recycled and fed to Jake Toseland for Buckby’s opening try. Andrew Frankland added the points to put Buckby 10-8 ahead.
Just seven minutes later second row Andrew Tarplee showed great determination to brush off two tackles to go over in the corner, and although the kick was missed Buckby had scored 15 unanswered points to make the score 15-8.
Frankland added another three points as the increasing pressure exerted by the home side forced Oundle to give away a penalty only 10 metres out, and with 10 minutes remaining centre Nick Dixon put in a crunching tackle on his opposite number causing him to cough up the ball to Luke Foster who fed Jake Toseland for his second and Buckby’s third try making the score 25-8.
Oundle, who had lost only one game this season prior to Saturday’s game, and they came back strongly.
They spent the next few minutes pressurising Buckby and on 77 minutes scored their second try of the afternoon. The conversion put them within striking distance of a losing bonus point at 25-15, but Buckby were determined not to let them back in and closed the game out for a great win.
The second team were also in action against Oundle IIs on the adjacent pitch, and Buckby won 36-10, with Fred Saunders scoring five tries!
