Villagers are on a roll

KILSBY Tennis Club are on a successful run of four wins in a row and were seeking to make it five and maintain their push for a promotion place and a return to the top division in the Northampton League.

For their match against visitors Wollaston, Kilsby were able to field their strongest team of Steve Rose and Tim Morris and Mark Meagrow and Brian Perry.

Mark and Brian were first to take on Wollaston’s first pairing and the first set was the most competitive set they had faced all season. With no service breaks, the set was to be decided on a tie-break.

Mark and Brian came through successfully and relatively easily considering how tight the games had been.

This seemed to break the resolve of their opponents and they quickly went through the second set winning 6-3.

With their confidence now high, Wollaston’s second pairing offered little resistance with Mark and Brian overpowering them with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Steve Rose again was partnering Tim Morris and their match against Wollaston’s second pairing also proved a one-sided affair with Steve and Tim winning relatively easily 6-0, 6-4.

But their match against Wollaston’s first pairing proved to be much more competitive. The Wollaston pair were still ‘stinging’ from the result against Brian and Mark and were keen to make amends.

Catching Tim and Steve unawares they were quickly into their stride and won the first set 6-4. This sparked Steve and Tim into action who appreciated that if the team’s promotion hopes were to be kept alive they needed to knuckle down. This they did and comprehensively won the second set 6-1.

So overall a 7-1 win for Kilsby. This result makes the top of the second division a very tight affair with any of the top five teams capable of gaining promotion.

With just one match left for Kilsby, they play Corby who are just three points ahead of them and are currently in top place in the league.
