THE winner of the Daventry District Sportsman of the Year is celebrating after being crowned Northamptonshire’s top sportsman in 2011.
Mike Smallwood won the Local Sportsman of the Year award at the recent Northamptonshire Sports Awards ceremony.
The 64-year-old regularly competes in National and International Triathlons and became the World Champion in his age group in September after winning the World Championships in China.
After winning the Sportsman of the Year award at the recent Daventry District Sports Awards in October, he was selected to represent the district in the annual county awards.
Angela Copson, Allan Pittam, Natalie Bannigan, David McIntyre, Jordan Shingler, Lauren Taylor, Ronan McKenzie, the Pitsford Pirates Windsurfing Team and Daventry William Parker School also made it to the Northamptonshire ceremony but finished as runners-up.
Councillor Alan Hills, Community, Culture and Leisure Portfolio Holder at Daventry District Council, said: “On behalf of the whole district I’d like to offer my congratulations to Mike who fully deserves the recognition for his fantastic achievements.”
He added: “My condolences to all our worthy runners-up as well, and it shows the depth of sporting talent that we have in the district.”
