Mixed fortunes for squash players

DAVENTRY First team, who finished runners up in the County League last season, are looking to go one better this season.

New captain David McQuillan ran proceedings from the side lines.

First up were the ‘old guard’ Nick Murley and Jon Groom. Nick demolished his opponent easily finishing off a 3–0 win 9-2, whereas Jon had a battle but came from 2-1 down to win 3-2.

No such problems for Ryan Spragg who beat his opponent 3–0 and 9–0 in the third. This left Stewart Williams playing at number five who managed to beat an ex-number one for a fine victory and Nick Englert at number one, who after a hard hitting game, succumbed to a 3-1 defeat. Captain’s star player was Nick Murley.

Daventry third team began their season with a home game again Kettering Second string and the season got off to a flying start.

Nigel Berriman, who made the step up from last season’s sixth team, won 3-1.

Then up stepped captain Joe Bodenstein and Mark Griffey who made easy work of their opponents. Next up was Peter Tiffen at number two who continued the good work which left number one Simon Wallis.

After a close and hard-fought game Simon did not get over the final hurdle and lost 3-2. Captain’s star player was Nigel Berriman.

Reigning Division Four champions Daventry fourth team with a new line-up started their season convincingly with a resounding 5–0 victory over Lings Five.

Captain Gerry O’Donnell led by example and despite being behind in the first game battled to victory winning 3–0. Susannah Jordan, at number four, had a few tense moments but was a worthy 3–1 winner. Terry Welbourne, at number three, was not made to work too hard and came away with a 3–0 win.

James Rodgers, at number two, came away with a 3–0 win and Steve Wightman played at number one and completed the rout with a convincing 3–0 victory. Captain’s star player was himself – Gerry O’Donnell.
