Weedon’s 15-year-old kart racing driver Ronan McKenzie is back on the top step of the podium after claiming glory at Whilton Mill.
He won the second round of the Junior Rotax 125cc class for 14-17 year olds at in the Stars at Whilton Mill Championship.
This year McKenzie (pictured below), backed by local firm PIL Gritblast, is back competing at the 11-round Stars at Whilton Mill Championship 2014 focused on winning the championship.
Round one did not go to plan, with McKenzie having to retire from the event to have a hand injury x-rayed following an accident in the first heat race. Fortunately it was just a bad sprain, and McKenzie recovered fully to compete in round two on February 23.
McKenzie suffered more bad luck in the first heat, with a failed battery causing a retirement from the race during the first lap, leaving him 30th out of a large grid of 33 karts competing.
But two superb drives from McKenzie saw him take seventh place from starting 26th in heat two, and sixth in heat three from starting in 20th.
These great results placed him in grid position 12 for the final race.
The final got underway and there was a multiple kart accident ahead of McKenzie, but the experienced youngster was able to pick a path through stationary karts and came out in fifth in the first lap. McKenzie then set about catching the leaders, and made his way into third position a few laps from the end.
With the leading two karts battling through the final corners, McKenzie timed his move to perfection and as they took a wide line on the last corner, McKenzie shot through on the inside and took the win.
McKenzie said after the race “It was a tough weekend, I had a lot to do after the battery went on the first lap of heat one. It all come together though at the end, approaching the last corner I knew I would be close enough to at least challenge for second but both karts went wide which left the inside clear for me to overtake both and take the win.”
Round three of the Stars at Whilton Mill Championship will take place on March 23 at the circuit in Daventry.
