On what felt like the coldest day of the year, a reluctant Long Buckby IIs travelled to the home pitch of Atherstone IIs and warmed themselves up with a 5-2 victory.

Buckby’s centre forward, Ellie Sales, put away an early goal but Atherstone soon equalised.

So, naturally, Sales did it again! Chloe Kirby, who had assisted Sales’ first goal, got in on the action and scored her own, making it 3-1.

Captain Jo Russell played a strong defence, making up for Buckby’s lack of goalkeeper, and was backed up by Rachael Hibberd and Lynn Windatt, to keep the Atherstone Ladies at bay.

Unfortunately Abbie Arnull took a ball to the head which went unnoticed by the umpires and Atherstone scored in the confusion. She bravely played on and Buckby soon received a short corner. Arnull made an excellent strike which Sophie Windatt tapped in behind the keeper.

Buckby’s fifth goal came from an exciting short corner after the final whistle had blown. Arnull received the ball and slipped it straight into the goal.

Abby McDowell was awarded player of the match for working hard in defence and in driving the ball forwards.

The club is always looking for new players so if you are interested in joining a fun, family hockey club please check out our website, www.longbuckbyhc.co.uk, or join us at training on Thursdays 7:30-9pm at William Parker E-Act Academy astroturf pitch.
