HOCKEY: Nicholls hat-trick secures draw for Long Buckby

Zara Nicholls scored a hat-trick as Long Buckby drew 3-3 with Atherstone.

The game was Buckby’s toughest challenge to date but the whole team battled and dug deep to the end to ensure they came away with a draw and a point from the game.

Nichols scored the first game of the match which was soon followed by an Atherstone equaliser.

Good team work from the forwards enabled Buckby’s Nichols to take the home team into the lead again, but Atherstone again hit back with another equaliser.

As the matche opened up towards the end, Atherstone edged into the lead for the first time. But Buckby didn’t panic and worked even harder, Nichols once again scored the equalising goal, completing her hat trick with only a few minutes to go.

Saints 0 Daventry Ladies 1

Reigning champions Daventry Ladies produced a masterclass in counter attacking hockey to defeat Saints.

Proving that a will to win is sometimes more important than a skill to win, Daventry, who travelled with only 11 players soaked up immense amounts of pressure

But through hardwork and determination they ground out a fantastic result.

Ash won POM with a great display, but in truth every single player deserved it for this display. The only goal came midway through the second half, Gemma firing home after Daventry carved Saints’ defence open with a slick move. Although very early in the season, this result could prove to be very important in determining this year’s champions.

Long Buckby Ladies IIs 0 Edgbaston Ladies 4

Long Buckby IIs played host to Edgbaston Ladies and were keen to follow their strong performance from last week.

Unfortunately Buckby found themselves on the back foot from an early on.

With Edgbaston short of a keeper, Buckby had an extra player to mark, which provided Edgbaston with more opportunity for movement.

Buckby had several opportunities but were unfortunate not to capitalise on their chances through strong defensive play from the visitors.

Buckby fought hard following the break but were unable to make a mark on the scoreline whilst Edgbaston added two goals to theirs.

A disappointing result for Buckby who continue look for their first league win. Player of the match was Abby McDowell.
