DAVENTRY’S Matthew Edgar and Kevin Painter are setting their sights on premier titles when they head to the Reebok Stadium in Bolton next month.
The four-day event which starts on Thursday, June 7 will be filmed live on Sky Sports and hosts all of the world’s top talent.
The event has been nicknamed ‘the FA Cup of darts’ due to its seeding system which allows players to enter the event according to their seeding from a series of events which started earlier this year.
Kevin ‘The Artist’ Painter will enter the event in the third round stage. He will be entering the event following a narrow miss in the premier league last week in Newcastle.
Kevin is one of the favourites for the event with the bookies following his first major title win just a couple of months ago. He is showing form at the right time with a recent semi-final on the pro tour at the NIA Birmingham narrowly missing out to Andy ‘the hammer’ Hamilton
Matthew Edgar enters the event in the round two stage.
He will be expected to be on stage around 10pm on the Thursday night and is awaiting the result of an earlier match in which he expects to play either Kevin Mcdine or Steve ‘bomber’ Brown.
Matthew made his debut in the event one year ago when he made it through to round four. He is confident of a similar run this year and has been showing good enough form to suggest he could go deeper into the event this time around.
After the second round stage the event will become an open draw. There will be no seeding for the rest of the event and anybody could draw anybody.
Asked about the possibility of playing 15-times world champion Phil Taylor in the third round, Matthew said: “Clearly I’m not going to be expected to win and it would be very cliche of me to say anything can happen or he has three darts like I do, but it’s a game I seriously don’t fear and would welcome greatly, beating Phil next month would change my life.”
