THE MML Masters competition at Hellidon Lakes Golf Club proved to be a closely contested affair at the weekend.
Leading the way after the first round was Tom Laver with a nett 70 off his six handicap closely followed by Ben French nett 71 handicap five and Mike Thomas in third with a nett 73 handicap 17.
A total of 24 players made the half way cut and in near perfect conditions Darren Welsh set the early clubhouse lead with a nett 69 from his 12 handicap.
In second was Paul Upfield with a nett 74 handicap seven and Malcolm Gregory in third with a nett 74 handicap 14. Michael Canning was steadily putting together a round off nett 74 to go with his nett 74 in the first round to take the honours.
He only beat Mike Thomas into second place by virtue of a better second round as both were tied on a total of 148.
Third was Malcolm Gregory with a total of 149.
