DAVENTRY Athletic Club members look to be in good shape for the new league season which starts this weekend.
Twenty-year-old Michael Fenn travelled to Hull to represent East Midlands/South Humberside in a match against South East Poland, a UK Select Team and the host club, Kingston upon Hull. He won the men’s long jump with a distance of 6.89m jumping into a 1.6m/sec headwind.
Sixteen-year-old Niklas Aarre climbed to the top of the UK rankings for the U17 men’s discus when he threw 45.88m (a club record) at an Open Meeting at Kettering. He improved on that at Rugby on Saturday with a distance of 47.20m.
Fellow sixteen-year-old Kieran Russ, who has been selected to compete for the Midlands in the UK Schools event at the Olympic Stadium next week, recorded a time of 14.1 sec in the 100m hurdles.
Matt Clarke threw 42.41m in the javelin and jumped 5.94m in the long jump and Sam Meyler cleared 1.73m in the high jump and recorded 6.07m in the long jump.
All five athletes have benefited from extra sessions over winter at Daventry Leisure Centre gym, courtesy of Daventry District Council’s Passport to Excellence scheme.
Other good performances so far include Connor Aldridge in the U/15 Boys’ 400m (55.0), Jack Bond in the U/15 Boys’ long jump (5.07m), Megan Owen in the U/15 Girls’ high jump (1.45m) and Maisy Radford in the U/15 Girls 300m (47.3).
