Moloney confident Cobblers can maintain their winning habit

Defender Brendan Moloney admits he has never been part of a run of form like the one he is enjoying with the Cobblers.

The Irishman has been a key part of the Town team that has won 11 of the past 12 matches in Sky Bet League Two, with Town aiming for their seventh straight win at Leyton Orient on Saturday.

The run has seen the Cobblers open up a five-point gap at the top of the table, with the team having dropped just eight points in their past 18 games.

It is an incredible sequence of results, and when asked if he had ever been part of a run like it, the former Yeovil man said: “No, I haven’t. Not on the scale that we have done it.

“It is a great feeling, and when you go out there on a Saturday and you come off at 5pm and you know you have done your job and won three points, it is a great feeling and one we don’t want to lose.”

Winning has become a habit for the Cobblers this season, and for Moloney in particular as he has been part of just one losing Town team so far in the campaign - the 2-1 defeat to Portsmouth at Sixfields in December.

That’s because he missed the start of the season through a knee injury, not returning until the 2-1 FA Cup win at Coventry City in November, and the 27-year-old is really enjoying himself at the moment.

“It is great, everybody is full of confidence, enjoying themselves, and we are enjoying where we are in the league, so it is all good,” said the Kerry-born full-back.

“Everybody in the dressing room is focused on one thing, and that’s on winning games and staying in the position we are in.”

Town will face a major test of their winning form on Saturday when they go to Leyton Orient, who have hit a good run of form themselves under new player manageer Kevin Nolan.

The former West Ham United man has guided the Londoners to three wins in his four games in charge, and last Saturday they pulled off an impressive 1-0 win at Portsmouth, who are dropping down the league two table at an alarming rate.

Moloney knows Town are in for a tough test from the Os, and their player-manager, who was playing in the Premier League for the Hammers as recently as August.

“Orient are a team that have changed their manager and have had a few good results recently, but we will go there full of confidence,” said Moloney.

“Kevin Nolan will be a threat, he’s not been out of the game too long, and he can nick a goal too so he will be dangerous.

“But they have a good squad and a few other dangerous players, so if we are not fully on it or fully up for it, they can cause us problems.”
