Long Buckby hammered bottom-of-the-table Bourne 82-3 at Station Road on Saturday - but the team were unhappy with their performance.
A half-time score of 34-0 in the spring sunshine might sound like an idyllic situation but, if truth be told, after an electrifying start that saw Ed Sitch score in the corner, what followed has a pretty poor 40 minutes of rugby from table toppers Buckby.
The knock-ons, over runs and poor discipline were interspersed with a great break from Nick Dixon leading to a try for Jonny Nixon and centre Luke Dixon added a try of his own after a great run from Andrew Frankland.
Sitch completed his hat-trick, Frankland himself added a sixth try and Ryan Clark kicked four points to make the half time score comfortable.
The second half was slightly better. Richard Ryan was stopped just short before James Hare finished in the corner and Hare quickly got his second after Bourne lost a scrum on their own line.
Back row Jake Toseland was one of the few Buckby players with safe hands and on 52 minutes his break created a try for blindside flanker Ben Walton before a Sitch break was well supported firstly by Fred Saunders, then Sam Evans and eventually Andrew Tarplee for scrum half Ryan to score under the posts. Bourne managed a penalty to get themselves on the board.
With the Midlands Junior Vase Final only two weeks away home fans were saddened to see Nick Dixon carried off with a suspected broken ankle but on a brighter note, after major knee surgery, replacement Nathan Maddox seems to regaining his form and pace from two years ago.
Buckby finished the day with tries from Jake Toseland, Jonny Nixon, Nathan Maddox and Ben Walton.
The win saw Buckby extend their advantage over second-placed Oundle to 16 points in the Midlands Four East (South) table.
Long Buckby are on the road this weekend when they travel to mid-table Corby (ko 2.15pm).
The following Saturday (March 15) Buckby host Rugby Lions in the final of the RFU Midlands Vase.
